Hedgebrook is a retreat for women-identifying, non-binary, and gender non-conforming writers on 48 acres of farmland and old-growth forest on Whidbey Island. Each writer gets a private hand-built cottage with a fireplace, desk, and porch. Communal dinners in the farmhouse create a nightly writers' salon. Everything is free — housing, meals, studio — and there is no expectation of productivity metrics. Hedgebrook has supported Pulitzer, National Book Award, and MacArthur-winning writers since 1988.
