The Studio Museum in Harlem, founded in 1968 at Fifth Avenue and 125th Street, is the premier institution dedicated to Black art in the United States. Its Artist-in-Residence program (founded the same year) hosts three artists per year for 11-month residencies with studio space, a stipend, and a culminating exhibition. Alumni include Kehinde Wiley, Mickalene Thomas, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Simone Leigh, and many of the most celebrated Black artists of the past half-century.
