Great facilities, but the large size dilutes the community

VSC has genuinely excellent facilities — big studios, good printing equipment, a kilns room. The Johnson, VT setting is beautiful. But with 50+ artists in residence at any given time, the sense of community I'd experienced at smaller residencies was harder to find. Dinners felt more like a cafeteria than a salon. That said, you make your own experience, and there are real gems among the fellows if you seek them out. The scholarships make it accessible in a way the more prestigious programs aren't.

✓ Pros

Large studios, excellent facilities, many financial aid options, rolling admissions

✗ Cons

Size means community depth is variable. Johnson is very small — limited entertainment beyond the campus.
